Pet food

I often get questions about what kind of pet food to feed. There are several great brands out there that I'd
recommend, however
Dogfoodanalysis.com is a great place to do your own research. Unfortunately
most dog food on the store shelves (Wal Mart, Fred Meyer, etc.) is loaded with poor quality ingredients.
Usually one of the first three ingredients is corn... not easy to digest and a cheap filler. This drives
buyers to big box pet retailers or to pet specialty shops.

Beware though... you still have to read the labels, especially at the big box stores.  Eukanuba loads their
"sensitive stomach" formula with brewers rice (a cheap filler is their first ingredient!), corn meal, (cheap
filler) and chicken by-products (guts, feet, nasty stuff). Yuk. Maybe that's what they meant by "sensitive
stomach formula"?  Science Diet starts their first four ingredients off like this: Brewers rice, corn gluten
meal, chicken by-product meal, corn meal. Yuk. Fillers, fillers, mystery by-products, and more fillers.
This is also their "sensitive stomach" formula. Science diet isn't a cheap brand to buy, but I guess you're
paying for all of their advertising and not for quality ingredients?

We often feed our puppies
"By Nature - Puppy formula".  We feed it to our young growing dogs as well
as our pregnant females and have found that they really like the taste.  It's also easy to recommend to
our new puppy owners because it can be found at most PetSmart locations.  We have not used the
adult formula so cannot rate it either way, but have had great results with the Puppy formula.  Below is a
link to a review of the ingredients:

We also have been happy with "Dog Lover's Gold", however it isn't available in all areas so it's hard to
recommend when it's difficult to find.  This is a nice quality dog food if you can find a dealer in your area.

We buy ours from DogTown on Thor in Spokane, WA. Here is their website address, but I do not see
where their dog food is available for purchase online.
http://www.dogtownco.com  It appears to be
available only in their retail location. Other favorite brands of dry dog food that I've tried and have liked
have been
Merrick, Taste of the Wild (high prairie formula), and California Natural.  As far as canned
dog food, I like to feed
Evanger's  duck and sweet potato or By Nature chicken or beef.
We have used Mountain Empire for our dogs for around three years now and they have
been fantastic. However we've known Dr. Julia Leese for closer to 15 years when she
used to treat our horses.

She's a wonderful vet and you can tell she does what she does because of her love for
animals. She's the vet many people wish for but often don't find. I'm glad we found her!

Wellness Products
We take a more natural approach with our dogs with giving only necessary vaccines, cleaning without harsh
chemical cleaners, and paying attention to what we feed.

We use
Nikken products in the care of our dogs.  Having been a distributor of the products for several years and
seeing the results from using them on sore and injured horses (as well as our sore and injured selves!), it was a
no-brainer to start using them with our dogs as well.

We've found that they'll lap up a bowl of water mixed with Greenzymes (organic barley grass immune system
booster) and that they prefer Pi-Mag water over tap water (Bostons aren't dumb :) and they're always up for a
magnetic massage. The bonus is no harmful side effects and the products can be used on humans and dogs alike.
